In the last post, I mentioned that I go to the dump for useful items. What we have is a VERY large recycling/dump center which is across from the landfill site. I guess this helps out with the travel portion of refuse elimination. Anyway, the center has large bins which are marked for metals, wood, household trash, household items, plastic, paper and plastic bottle and aluminum, oil and reuse. Like I said, this is a large site.
The reuse area is like a backyard metal shed. It is a decent size where you can put stuff that still can be used by someone. It's like a yard sale without the prices. You take what you need and leave the rest. I like this option because it benefits those who leave stuff and those who need stuff. Saturdays and holidays are the busiest times. Everyone is out on Saturdays. Some people come for gifts they can give for the holidays. This is the time I especially like to leave stuff. One time, I left a video game racing wheel with the programs to go with it. A couple of older women came behind us and took it home. It made me feel good. But at the same time, it made me sad. For me, I like the challenge of getting something and remaking it and giving it to someone who needs it.
I like the fact that they recycle oils that would normally get pitched into the landfill or loosed into someone's yard. They take any oils...car oil, cooking oil, etc. I'm surprised how many people actually use this portion of the site. Every time I visit, there is someone being responsible and dumping oil into the bins. Yay!
Also, they remove what is left in the swap shed at the end of the day and take it to the appropriate bin and put it into the landfill. Nothing sits overnight.
Quite a few people work the site during the day. That's good for our area. They wear orange vests. If you need help lifting something into a bin, they'll help.
Do you have something like this in your area? If not, see if your county will sponsor this. It never hurts to ask.
Take care.

Some Crafting Stuff
Hello everyone!
Today is my show-and-tell for all of you. I've been crafting a little and I'd like to show you what I've done.
First, for our little home on wheels...
I bought some marine-grade vinyl because the sun in South Carolina is wicked on any kind of plastic. I cut a round and a side band. I sewed them together and made a sleeve on the open end so I could hold it on with a drawstring. It went 1800 miles and is still on the camper wheel. Yay!
Next, a few somethings for our bathroom...
I couldn't stand this little etagere any more. I've had it for nearly 30 years and it had to change or go. The wastebasket above got a fresh coat of paint. The little fishies got a white dry-brushing. I should've done it sooner, but I didn't have the nerve to paint them. Glad I did!
Then...
I couldn't stand the little brown wooden mirrors anymore. So I painted and distressed them. I LOVE them now.
And a little something more...
I saw this craft on a website, which I'll mention more of at a later time. This woman, AJ, has a FABULOUS way with repurposing stuff. I ADORE her website!
Anyhow, this is a cheap-o glass candle stick from a dollar store, an old candle holder and a chunk of light blue ribbon. Inside is a white votive that I had in my candle stash and the blue stuff is crystal air freshener from the dollar store. This is put together temporarily with hot glue. I just found some E-6000 to permanently bond stuff together. I'm going to change out the ribbon for some jute and seashells to make it more 'beachy'. I still need to make curtains and a shower curtain. Then I'll show the whole shebang when It's done. I have another project for this room. I'll show you that later.
Take care.
Happy crafting!!!

Recycle!!!
The last post showed the new washcloths I made for the shower. I used one last night and they are a scrubby with a nice lather. It worked! Hooray!
In my last post I complained about the terrycloth ones I buy in the store. Well, instead of just complaining, I started doing something about them.
As you see, the one on the right is what I started with. Yuk! The one on the left is the finished product. I crocheted around the edge after I trimmed and blanket stitched around the edge. I hope this lasts a while and doesn't fray any more. If I remember, I'll keep you updated on this one. I'd hate to put so much time into these for them not to last. I have two more to go.
Update!
The babies are huge! Look at all of the feathers they have! This will be my third week of them being with me. They've eaten 15 lbs of crumbles in two weeks time. I just bought a 50 lb bag of crumbles. Let's see how long this lasts with these little eating machines!
The three on the right and the one in the middle forefront have learned to take a dust bath. That's what they're doing now. It's so funny to watch. There's no dust, just grass. I have to move this pen tonight so they don't wear out the grass. This is just a playpen for them. They are outside in this for about an hour, right now. I have to watch them because we have hawks.
I hope all of you have a great day!
